From Thai Hilltribes to Costco: Chacha’s Impact on Organic Farming

Paddy that is grown organically, flourishes amid a diversity of flora.

Chacha is a profitable Thai-based producer of organic rice and chia-based pasta and noodles. In 2025, it reached a major milestone by exporting its rice and millet noodles to Costco in the United States. The company also sells under its own brand, Perfect Earth Foods.

Chacha sources organic rice, chia, and eggs from marginalized hilltribe communities in the Northwest of Thailand, near the Burma border. These farmers are members of the Akha and Karen tribes—Indigenous groups that have faced systemic discrimination for generations. Only in the past two decades have many secured full rights as Thai citizens.

Ms. Mee Tae, a member of the Akha hilltribe living in the Wawee district, harvests chia.

With steady demand from Chacha and fair prices for their organic production, Hilltribe farmers are able to earn a living without having to send family members to Chiang Rai or Bangkok for work. The villages that supply Chacha are hardly prosperous, but they are rich in culture—and the optimism among the youth suggests a bright future ahead.

Beneficial Returns made its first loan to Chacha in 2020 and provided a fourth loan in March 2025 to support the company’s continued growth. Below is a photo from our Community Trip to the Wawee Valley in late 2023.

Celebrate Chacha’s growth by sharing their story on LinkedIn and shining a light on the farmers they support.
